Thank you : after some experimentation I can now confirm that adjust the size of the monospace font does indeed affect the size of the font used in the Compose window. But nowhere, so far as I can tell, is the leading for fonts specifiable, so "how to address vertically cramped display" is also unresolved. It would seem that Seamonkey honours half of the Windows preferred font size setting : that is, it honours the larger font, but the the concomitant increase in leading needed to accommodate a larger font.
