Verizon blamed Mozilla for the duplication, by the way.

My laptop crashed and I urgently need to protect my mail before sending to
HP for repairs.

(not too techie!)

Lori, if your Laptop is still working, and you can get SeaMonkey up and running, have a look at Edit->Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings, and select "Server Settings" for your e-mail account.

At the bottom of that screen, you should see "Local Directory". Note that location, quit SeaMonkey and copy all the files and sub-folders in that location to a USB stick or burn it to a DVD/CD's. This should save your profile, including e-mail's sent and received.

Check out http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_SeaMonkey for more details!

I'm guessing if you did the same sort of thing in ThunderBird, you would find same sort of result.
