You don't have to drag. Just click the grippy once to toggle on or off. Clicking the one between the folder list and the other two turns the folder list on or off; clicking the one between the message list above and the message pane below turns the message pane on or off.
The advantage of doing it this way is that if you ever use the divided view, SM will remember the proportions, and when you turn it back on, it'll divide the panes at the same point as before.
