I do exactly the same. I also compose my HTML and CSS manually, in a
Wordpad window. That results in very lean HTML and CSS, which I then
test at <http://validator.w3.org/> and
<http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/>.

My server-side scripts are in Korn UNIX. My ISP gave me a shell account
that allows me to login to my Web space on their server so that I can
test them.
