Q1. Does "Download Manager" really appear when you save an email
attachment - I thought it was only for http downloads from web sites?
Not normally, at least I've never seen it in that context, and I've been
here since Netscape 4.7. But I haven't changed my prefs lately, so your
friend's prefs may differ from mine.
Thanks, his settings would be "default", hence I posted here to see if
anyone had seen this. It's very odd that he'd get download manager while
trying to save an attachment...
I think I only ever got it once, the first day I installed SM and I must
have turned it off - never to be seen again!
Q2. Best way to turn it off completely?
Try this:
Edit | Preferences | Browser | Downloads
(o) Don't open anything
(•) Open a progress dialog
(o) Open the download manager
or
(•) Don't open anything
(o) Open a progress dialog
(o) Open the download manager
Thanks, that's the place I thought it was, so I'll tell my SM friends to
turn it off.
I do understand the possible benefit of download manager for people who
download dozens of files at once, but it's confusing for non technical
users.
My usual practice in such cases is to right-click in the attachment area
and choose "Save As." A dialog opens in which I can choose the target
directory, and when I do, SM puts all the incoming files from the given
message in that directory. Very convenient when a client sends me a
bunch of files and I save them all in that client's folder.
