I use Teranews.com for my Usenet account, and have two accounts
for it, free.teranews.com has my forty-odd general usenet groups,
and 69.16.185.252 (the equivalent of free.teranews.com) is for my
dozen or so computer usage groups, however.....

For the past few days, this second account has been timing out,
so I've got no access to these groups.

The first account works, but (as you're probably aware) there's
very little activity on any of the general groups, some but not
much![snip]

You might wish to try other free USENET servers.
Two list of free servers are:
http://www.newzbot.com/
http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Usenet/Public_News_Servers/

Two providers I've used occasionally and have generally good thins about
http://www.aioe.org/
http://www.eternal-september.org/

I personally use the "text only" option of supernews.com - a paid server
but reliable and trouble free.

Thanks for the suggestions, Richard. Eternal-September is an oft
mentioned UseNet server, which I might have to investigate if I cannot
get my free.teranews.com (or rather the 69.16.185.252) account going again!

I paid $3.75 for my account on the server, but as that was about 10
years ago, I suppose I cannot bitch too much!!

If your needing text only I highly recommend news.individual.net
http://www.individual.net/

It was free for years but now they charge 10 Euros a year $1,10 a month.
The retention and speed is great with no limits and once I tried it for that price it wasn't worth screwing around with free servers anymore. I have been using it since the mid 1990s and never once had a problem except in 1998 when they changed some settings on the server and I had Netscape configured wrong.
