why did you do it with tar - thats an archive utility?
I got that particular sequence from a neolithic version of the O'Reilly
"Running Linux". Ownership is preserved, Shambolic Links are preserved,
what more can you ask for?
In this case I did not need either feature but that is simply the way I
copy directories around. One size fits all.
