SeaMonkey (and Thunderbird) devs were not involved in removing Growl at all. This is all backend Core code. We did have to manage fallout in SeaMonkey and Thunderbird because of this though.
That's probably because Growl support is/was so useful to both SeaMonkey and Thunderbird. ;-) You have my commiserations with regard to reaping the outcry for a situation you didn't create. That said, would it be difficult to add the old Growl code to SeaMonkey builds? Growl is the only viable mechanism for system-wide notifications from SM for users on Snow Leopard and Lion. I expect SM to be supported on both OS releases for some time to come.
As I wrote in another message, the XUL notifications are only visible on the desktop on which SM is running. Moreover, the XUL notifications stomp all over Growl notifications. And if you're dragging a message to a folder when a XUL notification pops up, the drag loses focus and the move fails. Not really a step forward, IMO.
