Whether Growl is interesting to you or not is largely dependent on which
operating system you're using. Judging from your user agent, you're on
Windows. Whether Growl is useful to you on Windows is mostly, in my
opinion, limited to whether you're using a virtual desktop manager of
some sort. If not, then you're probably seeing XUL notifications
whenever mail comes in (assuming you've enabled it). And that makes
Growl kinda meaningless in this context.
Growl was originally created for OS X (which I use), but there is a port
for Windows:
http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/
Its purpose is to enable applications to give bubble- or tooltip-like
notifications that can be displayed to the user with transparency over
any application on the system.
The reason why removal of Growl support in SeaMonkey 2.19 is important
to me is because XUL notifications are limited to the same desktop on
which SeaMonkey resides; I have 6 desktops configured on my system, so I
miss most of the notifications whenever I'm working outside of SM itself.
Cheers,
trane
