The problem was /not/ my problem; I was asked by someone
who could not post to the list if I could post it on his
behalf, which I did. He then sent a personal reply thanking
me, and also thanking Paul Gallagher, which I forwaded
to Paul as a courtesy. End of explanation.

And how is that any different ?
As well as the common courtesy of reporting the results (which you could easily have overlooked), instead of being insulting, it would have been more appropriate to thank Paul for reporting it for you.

It is a question of manners, my friend ...

Why bother posting your problem to the list if you are not going to
follow standard common courtesies associated with such lists ?
You invite others to totally ignore your posts.
And your response to being reminded of this protocol doesn't help.
