I had never imagined trying to do that. It doesn't strike me as a

Copy/paste definitely doesn't work for me. I am curious, though, why you
wouldn't expect drag'n'drop of a text document to inline properly even
though a JPG does. From an algorithmic standpoint, it seems to be
same-same: embed an object inline in the main document and display. The
only thing that's changing is the MIME type.
Maybe cuz I'm not a computer programmer. I would expect dragging and
dropping files to an attachment window to work. And I would expect C&P
of "stuff" inside a file into a message body to work. I truly wonder if
it's not accidental that dropping a whole JPEG type file into a message
body even works.
The original question of "c&p from Desktop" didn't even make sense to me.
Ever notice that the questions that make little sense often have ZERO
additional input from the OP?

Not accidental. You can do inline graphics in an HTML message to it's
logical to assume that drag-n-drop of most image formats would work. By
the same token I'd figure that a text file would not work: SM would
have to open the file and insert the contents. Might be a nice feature
but it's not something I've expected to happen since beginning using
SM/Netscape in about 1995.
