The "Replace Existing Tabs" does not work problem has been around for a long time (2007?) as reported in Bugs 369440 and 664101. As I recall, Philip Chee was working on this for Firefox and used the same approach for Seamonkey and that point, "Replace Existing Tabs" no longer worked in Seamonkey.
