If all you want is to be able to use a previous profile if your current one becomes corrupted you are working much too hard.

Are you aware that you can have as many profiles as you have room for on the HDD? And just use the one you want? So you don't need to "restore" the older one, just use it.

The only tool you ever need to save Mozilla data, "restore" lost or corrupted data, or move data to another machine, is COPY. Whether it is one file or a complete directory tree, COPY.

And mail/news are not actually part of the profile, the profile points to them. By default they are located in the profile tree, but you can put them anywhere that the OS is able to access them; like a different partition, a network computer, a thumb drive,,,.
