I have windows vista with seamonkey 2.24.

My hard drive was dying so I took it into the shop. They backed up my data, replaced the hard drive, and reinstalled the OS. It fell to me to reinstall my programs.

Now I have a near empty address book, and limited emails in trash.

I don't know the names of the files that contain such data, but I seem to recall reading that it is in my profile. Is my best option to find the old profile and put it where the new one is? If this is so, how do I do it.

If there is a simpler way, tell me what to do.

I'm a bit worried that I will lose the data I have recreated in recent days. You can't just ask a site to send you your password; they rather have you created a new password, and carp if you try to put your old one in as the new one.
Good reading before re-instate your old profile backed up by the shop:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Recovering_a_missing_profile
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_SeaMonkey
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder

My profile under windows7 is at:
C:\Users\RZ\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\ey8r9gln.default
RZ is the windows username
ey8r9gln.default is my current profile

If i was in the same situation like yours my profile could have been backed up here

D:\BACKUP\Users\RZ\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\bmmg3klv.default

So, i can, as a brute force do:
1. Stop SM and be sure that there is no SM instance running, the best way is to reboot the machine without starting SM.
2. Change the name of the current profile as:
C:\Users\RZ\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\ey8r9gln.old-default
3. Copy the backed-up bmmg3klv.default into the current profile location as follow:
C:\Users\RZ\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\Profiles\bmmg3klv.default
4. Change the name of the folder from: bmmg3klv.default to: ey8r9gln.default
5. Start SM and you have recovered your old situation.
