Hartmut, if you wish to raise that bug, I'll confirm that simply changing the
preference "Edit / Appearance / Fonts / Allow Documents to use other fonts" is
the only single preference-change that alters the Message-Body display, from a
readable-sized plain-text, into a miniature fancy HTML-type font.

I normally allow Documents to use other fonts, so was not aware of this until
you raised it.
