Only to test my message with the three chars and your reply to it. For a
test the effort is bearable. ;)

The problem here is, that your message was declared as iso-8859-15, but
the three unreadable chars were in reality utf-8 chars. Displaying utf-8
chars as iso-8859-15 give strange results. *g*

I am now using a very old Trunk SM. One before the changes to the
handling of the Character Encoding. And i am unable to find the relevant
setting.

Oh, i can find it for single news groups. In the context menu of news
group, http://www.triffids.de/pub/screenshot/sm140705-4.png, if you
check 'Apply encoding...' SM would be forced to ignore the encoding of
the message.

But there was a place for a global setting. My memory insists on it but
it refuses to tell me, where. Hrmpf.

Let us look into about:config with the filter charset. Near the end is a
pref which looks promising. mailnews.force_charset_override. It is set
to false here. If it is set to true on your machine, we should have
found the culprit.
