Thanks Ronnie. Also, why are you e-mailing me (no wonder I am getting
more spam e-mails lately :()? Just post in public only (no need to
include my e-mail address).
To protect yourself from such mistakes, I think you can add a Reply-To:
pointing to the group or mailing list.
OK, I just did. Does reply-to-all also list my (munged) address, or does
that work? Let's see.
All right, here are the results:
Reply to Newsgroup:
Newsgroup: mozilla.support.seamonkey
Reply to Sender Only:
Reply-To: mozilla.support.seamonkey <>
To: [blank]
Reply to Sender and Newsgroup:
Newsgroup: mozilla.support.seamonkey
Reply to All Recipients:
Reply-To: mozilla.support.seamonkey <>
Newsgroup: mozilla.support.seamonkey
Not one of these is addressed to me. If I adopt your suggestion, the
only way a reply can be addressed to me is if the poster consciously
chooses to manually insert my name in the distribution list. He can't be
rude accidentally or inadvertently, he has to work at it.
But if I don't adopt your suggestion, then it is possible for someone to
include my personal (munged) address by choosing "Reply to Sender Only"
or "Reply to All Recipients." This is a mistake, but it's an easy one to
make (mechanically, I mean -- the poster still has to choose to be rude,
but he doesn't have to work so hard at it).
Verdict: Yes, this is a good idea.
Best practice for replies -- and by far the easiest for repliers -- is
still "Reply" (CTRL-R). Some people, for reasons I don't understand,
think that's too easy and go out of their way to be rude. I wish the NG
owners could just change a setting so an explicit Reply-To address was
automatically inserted to thwart that. But with a munged address,
personally IDGAF.
