There is an extension that can help: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/seamonkey/addon/dictionary-for-recipient/
This does not bring back the old behaviour but for some scenarios could work.
I don't think there is an extension (yet) to bring back the old behaviour because this issue/change is quite new.
