I use only POP. For quite some time now, maybe more than a year, many
multipart messages have been arriving that, when viewed in plain text only
mode, display no content. Prominent among them are eBay emails reporting
outbid or winning a bid. First of the sort from eBay was this past April 3.
1-Is there a way to make a "view message body as" selection apply on a folder
by folder basis?
2-Is there some pref setting available to make multipart messages with
non-empty first parts display the first part instead of displaying nothing,
without changing the "view message body as" selection?
I really really really don't like either having to go into the view message
body as menu, or view messages other than in plain text only mode. Most HTML
email is nothing but web pages distributed by SMTP instead of HTTP, almost
universally in mousetype, often littered with worthless images.
For some reason this did not make it through. Re-replying:
This almost sounds to me like some setting in config editor was messed
with because I don't see this issue on SM or TB. What version of SM?
What OS? If you go to about:config, there ought to be a lot of "user
set" items under mail.* or mailnews.*.
You could always try with a clean profile or try grabbing Portable
Thunderbird from
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable, configure
it and see if messages display properly. If portable TV display
properly, you may have some profile corruption in SM or you've
tinkered with an about:config pref in some way as to gum things up.
What happens is that people writing multipart email messages will put
content in the HTML part, but nothing in the plain text part. Since you
read mail as plain text, you see nothing. I have tried repeatedly to
get people who insist on sending me multipart email to put something
useful in the plain text part, even if it is just a link to a web page
where I can then get the import of the message. Some have actually paid
attention to that, and taken my advice.
