Check if you have a bookmarkbackups folder in your profile. If yes it should

If you have a places.sqlite.corrupt file in you profile they might also be
there.
Some deprecated js features were removed between 2.40 and 2.46. Unfortunately
there is more to come till 2.49. All add-ons normally shipped with SeaMonkey
broke and had to be fixed. Then again for 2.50. Might mean the death of a lot
of older add-ons. I would check them out one by one in a clean profile. Some
might just need some js compatibility patches. Usually I just look in the
error console and check if I see any errors there.

Have you tried to restore from backup?
"Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks", "Tools > Restore" There should be a list...
Thanks. There are several dates but nothing in there if I choose one and try
to restore it.
I think it may have had something to do with Multicolumn bookmarks that I use
on Pale Moon currently and on Firefox ESR until very recently. Multicolumn
bookmarks is a very old AMO Fx extension that has not been updated in a long
time and, in fact, is no longer listed at AMO. I had converted it for use in
SeaMonkey with LemonJuice's SeaMonkey Extensions Converter. Of my 26
extensions, none that I had that were converted ones worked after the upgrade
and I had to remove all of them as SeaMonkey would not even start until I did
that. I bet when I removed it in Safe Mode that it took all the bookmarks
with it. That possibility never occurred to me so I didn't manually backup
the bookmarks before removing that extension.
Thanks! There were 10 backups of the bookmarks going back to June 2016.
I imported the most recent one. I saw them appear instantly but then
got a puzzling, small popup saying they couldn't be imported. But they
were successfully imported! I'm glad as they go all the way back to the
beginning of Sea Monkey with some really old bookmarks with tips for
Windows 98SE and XP Pro which might come from the last version of
Mozilla Suite (can't recall if I was able to import bookmarks from there
into SeaMonkey). I suppose I should find time to prune the bookmarks!
I'm going to see if the Stylish code I have for Fx 45.6 ESR to make
multicolumn bookmarks also works in this version of SeaMonkey. I also
found the old Multicolumn Bookmarks code at github and will try it in
Stylish if the Stylish code I use on Fx won't work in SeaMonkey. I've
never understood why Mozilla did not incorporate multi columns for
bookmarks long ago in Fx as who wants to have scroll down an extremely
long and unwieldy column every time they want a bookmark?
