The Telus ISP is only supporting IMAP.
I am trying to set up using Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings > Add
Account. The addresses used in prefs.js to set up the folders such
as Sent & Drafts were different from those in the Thunderbird
settings. Correcting them did not help (and neither did leaving them
alone). In the Mail folder in the profile, there were only .msf files
and no data files, possibly because I could not connect. I could see
that the ports were correct. Telus kept telling me to enter the
passwords. They were correct, since I used the same ones with
Thunderbird.

In the Server Settings, does your ISP require your full email address
([email protected]) or only the prefix (nunya) as your username? Getting
that wrong could cause authentication to fail. Compare what you did in TB.

I actually compared the two setups in about:config, and made sure that they were alike. It did not help. Since Thunderbird works, I can just use that, and also webmail (to get rid of the trash).
