You're probably thinking of the time that the SSL certificate on the update server expired and was renewed in the unexpectedly long time between one release and the next. When the old version looked for updates, it didn't get the certificate it was expecting from the server and concluded that something was intercepting your connection and trying to trick it into installing something else.
