You will also want to have checked:
[x] Check for new messages at startup
I wouldn't recommend 'at startup'. If all you want to do is start the
program to compose a message, you have to sit through all that online
checking before you can use it.
Why? Downloading messages does not stop you from compose a message
concurrently. If you have a POP account then Check for new messages at
startup is quite handy.
