When I open -mail I get popups to download messages.

How do I tell Seamonkey to automatically do that by default when
I open Seamonkey ?

In folders pane of Mail & Newsgroup window right-click on root of
account and select "Settings..."

Server Settings > [x] Automatically download new messages

That one's a tossup. :-)

You will also want to have checked: [x] Check for new messages at
startup

I wouldn't recommend 'at startup'. If all you want to do is start the
program to compose a message, you have to sit through all that
online checking before you can use it.

Depends on your connection speed. With a 300 baud modem, yes, absolutely. With a broadband connection, message checking and download will complete before you can say the recipient's name.

[x] Check for new messages every [10*] minutes

IIRC 10 minutes is the default, but you can change it to whatever
you are comfortable with.

10 minutes is probably too often for most home users with only a
couple of accounts. My important accounts are set for 30 minutes and
the lesser ones for 60 or 120 or 240 ...

Here, too, connection speed makes a big difference. So does the amount of message traffic you expect. A few years back when I was getting 200-300 messages a day, the only way I could cope was to deal with messages as soon as they came in. Now that I'm down to a hundred or so, I can take a more relaxed approach, but 10 minutes is just right for me.

And of course my clients don't respond well if they offer me work and I take four hours to respond during a business day. That's what I call an "important account." ;-)
