In each of three of my five profiles, I have one sessionstore.json and
one sessionstore.bak.  In my other two profiles, I have no sessionstore
files of any kind.  In those two profiles, I have set my [Privacy &
Security > Private Data] preferences to always clear my Browsing
History, Location Bar History, and Cache.

I suspect (but have not tested) that clearing my Location Bar History is
what deletes sessionstore.json and one sessionstore.bak.  From the prior
comments in this thread, I believe you can safely delete the numbered
sessionstore files and any sessionstore.js as they are likely obsolete.
