The bookmarks manager was more or less broken by api removals and changes in
2.53. There are even some big problems in 2.49.5 (e.g. cut and paste of
folders / purging history by date) which could result in data loss.
It was basically replaced:

Since then the remaining fixes for the async api have been backported and it
is now turned on by default.
This in one area where I don't expect any older add-ons continue working.
