I just found the app yesterday. The developer says it has been tested. How
rigorously I don't know. I've attached the readme file

        PostNet Barcode Generator
=============================================
for FileMaker Pro 5.0 or later

Created by Charles Betz and Pariah Burke
User interface by Imaginations UNlimited

---------------------------------------------

Create barcodes on your mail.

This
system generates and applies to envelopes and/or labels POSTNET barcodes, which are
used by automatic sorting and routing machines in the U.S. Postal Service to deliver
mail faster and more reliably. Absolutely no fonts are required to create the
barcodes.

The system includes only two mandatory files: "Barcode Generator", which
is this file, and "_barcode_graphics", which, as you might guess from the title, holds
the images used to create the barcode. The images are what render the use of a special
POSTNET font obselete. Both files are required for the system to work, so you should
probably keep them in the same folder.

---------------------------------------------

In 1994 Charles Betz created BarcodeFMpro, which was no longer compatible with U.S.
Postal Service POSTNET specifications. Pariah Burke rebuilt the system, using Betz's
as a guide, in 2000 to be fully compliant and more useable for its intended purpose.
The system is now called PostNet Barcode Generator.

---------------------------------------------

Charles Betz's original read me text
appears below. Please do NOT follow the instructions as they have virtually no bearing
on PostNet Barcode Generator. Instead read the instructions inside the "Barcode
Generator" file.

Please let me know if you create a useful modification/update/etc.
to PostNet Barcode Generator.

FileMaker postal barcoding

This FileMaker template applies barcodes to standard
mailing lists; neither PostScript
nor special fonts are required. The main database is
"Label & barcode output," and
the two lookup databases "barcode lookup" and
"framebarfile" MUST be kept with the
main database. You may need to re-locate them at
first for the program.

This is freeware, so I'm not going to spend a whole lot of
time on it. The steps:

1. Normalize (separate) your zipcodes into three fields: zipa,
zipb, and zipc,
thus: aaaaa-bbbbcc. The last six digits are optional, and (per Post
Office spec)
will be filled in as 000100 if left blank. The last two digits may be
unfamiliar
to those of you new to postal barcoding, but they're necessary for full
postnet
compatibility (or were when this database was created).

2. Import your data
into the database; FileMaker's import-mapping should be clear
enough.

3. Run the
"Apply Barcodes" script.

4. Viola. You're on your own to format the labels or
response devices. Don't mess
with the spacing of the barcode fields though or you'll
knock it out of spec.
Print on 300-dpi laserprinter; the TIFF barcodes are optimized
for this. I don't
know if it works on 600 dpi or ImageWriter; you can try.

5. The
Post Office confirmed this system as in spec (on 300-dpi laser) for our
mailings in
fall 1992. They change their requirements frequently however and
there are NO
GUARANTEES that this system meets their requirements now.

6. Hope this saves you all
a lot of money! Drop me a line if it works (or
doesn't).

This is freeware but it's
still MINE. Call me first if you're going to try and make
a buck off it.
