Your choices are to restore the entire file set from your backup, or
taking a chance to run FileMaker's recover process. The recover
process is not recommended. There is apparently a significant chance
of leaving problems in the file that come back to bite you later.

You do not want to restore only the payment file from your backup.
All 29 files are inter-related. It's possible that more than the
payments file is damaged, and in any case data in the payments file
affects entries in other files.

So...
- Rename your ebase directory (to something like ebasedamaged). Don't
toss it yet, until you have a working copy restored and all the data
entered.
- Restore the entire ebase directory from your backup. I can't be
more detailed about that without knowing how you back up. If it's a
simple copy kept on a removable disk like a zip disk, just copy the
directory from the backup to the location of your working copy.
- Enter again all the data you keyboarded since the backup, including
payments, address changes, new name entries, etc.
