I agree this is a good general approach, but it wouldn't find people who were members
for part of a year and then had their membership expire without renewing (or who had a
membership of > 1 yr. duration, if you have that at your org).
What about doing a find on Grace Date and/or Expire Date (depending on your definition
of those two things) to see who had a membership that was active during that year?
So you might do two find requests:
1)As Dave's suggestion above, Dues payments with Post Date 1/1/1999...12/31/1999.
This would get you all memberships started or renewed last year.
2)Dues payments with Post Date <1/1/1999 and Grace Date (or Expire Date, whichever is
more relevant to you) of >1/1/1999. This should give you all memberships that
continued into the year.
Putting the two together should give you everyone who was a member at all during the
year.
