The number of members will change from month to month, as people join
and their memberships expire. I presume that the number of people who
paid dues within a period of time would work.

Searching by contributions that have Dues in the Payment For field
should work. Other contributions should be coded with Contribution or
Event/Purchase. On the View Payments screen, click the Find button,
enter your date range in the Post Date field, and Dues in the Payment
For field. This will find Dues payments within your date range. Click
the Transfer to Names button, which will jump you to the names file
and find all the people who made those payments.
