There's yet another solution in the form of a classical "opener" file. These
are commonly used for opening large solutions that live on FileMaker Server,
but have the advantage of also being able to get around file type changes.
You can even continue to use the runtime, if you want, and yet have
administrator access to all FileMaker functionality.

Create a new FileMaker (.fp5) file on your desktop, just as you might create
an alias. Don't define any fields, just one script, let's call it Open. In
it, create an Open step to open the ebase data file (the one with the.fpx
extension). Select this file from the ebase folder on the host computer or
through the Hosts dialog on client computers. Then select the Close step
with no filename selected. Save the script. Then make it auto-run on opening
the file by selecting Edit > Preferences > Document. One of the options
allows you to run a script when opening the file. Select your new script and
click OK. That's it. Quit.

Doubleclicking this opener file will open ebase in FileMaker, then close
itself. If you understand scripting well, you can even use error trapping to
prevent trouble if ebase can't be found. But I won't go into that here. Note
that trashing the runtime is still the easiest method.
