One addition to this:
Filemaker can be shared directly over the internet - not through a web interface but 
rather connecting directly to the database through a TCP/IP connection.
But it's rather slow - way too clunky for modem speeds.  You would definitely need DSL 
at both ends, static IP's at both ends, and a firewall that could prevent someone else 
from connecting (this last not as hard as it sounds).
Then you'd in effect be networked, but you don't need to go as far as you'd have to go 
to do file-sharing.
This may not be practical for you, but wanted you to know that it's possible.  Let me
