Henry,
Since FM5.5 required the databases created in 4.0 be converted to the 5.x
format, your assumption is correct.
As for the use of V5.0, I suggest you make a copy of the database to be
used and open the copy under 5.0. Then try and open the database with the
remote 5.5 station. This should work fine. However, be aware that new
features in 5.5 will not work under 5.0 if you update the database to 5.5
format.
Below is an article taken from the filemaker.com site which will shed more
light on the subject. Although it takes about accessing 5.5 databases with
5.0 software (reverse to your situation).
Hope this helps.

Can FileMaker Pro 5.5 Databases Be Opened In FileMaker Pro 5.0v3?
Article Number: 107342
You can use FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 to open databases that have been developed
in FileMaker Pro 5.5. If new FileMaker Pro 5.5 features were used in the
solution, various behaviors may result that effect those functions. Care
must be taken when designing databases that will be used in environments
where both FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 and FileMaker Pro 5.5 are installed.
Examples of the behaviors you might see range depending on the feature that
was used. Following are two separate examples:
1. Record-by-Record Access
If you setup a password to use record-by-record access, that password will
not allow you to open your database using FileMaker Pro 5.0. You will get
the error:
"This password does not enable you to perform this operation."
You would need to use a password that does not use the new password
limitations feature to access the database.
2. Open Hosts Script Step
A database opened in FileMaker Pro 5.0v3 and running the Open Host script
step will generate the following error:
"The previous script step, "<unknown>", could not be completed because of
an error. Do you wish to continue with this script?"

Subject: [support] FMP 5.5
Am I correct that FMP v4.1 cannot serve as host to a guest FMP v5.5? I
cannot get this arrangement to work and wonder if this is the reason. If I
update v4.1 on the host to v.5.0 can it then host v5.5?
