In quick answer to your questions:'

To keep old copies, just rename the ebase folder before copying it to
the zip drive.  I use the date of the backup so I readily know which
backup is from what date.  As for keeping a backup on the hard drive,
I'd recommend against doing what you do. If you keep a backup on the
hard drive, compress it first with some file compression software such
as WinZip for PC or StuffIt for Mac.  That way, Filemaker can't get confused.
