I don't know about what a trial version of the Filemaker Pro 5.5 software can do so I can't help you there. However, to make the changes I needed to sign in using Filemaker Pro and the password MASTER and go to the right screen and then switch to Layout view. The file I worked on was the names_.103 file. I am using the version 103 for the purpose of this discussion.
What I did was pretty simple and at the same time didn't change any of the field definitions. The only drawback is that the way I am about to describe doesn't format the phone numbers the way you are used to seeing them which is like 2-1234-1234 if I am correct in my memory.
If you don't need to add the country code, no changes are necessary, simply put 2-1 into the area code field and put 2341234 in the phone number. This will get you a displayed phone number that looks like 2-1-234-1234. If that isn't too confusing, you can work right from there.
What I needed to do is add the country code which was a number like... 61-2-1234-1234. So for this I put
61-2-1 in the area code and put 2341234 in the phone number. But to see the number in the display on the HOME and the DATA ENTRY layouts I had to stretch the area code field so it was larger and move the phone and ext field over to the right a little. I did this by going into layout mode.
If this doesn't work for you can look back at to the message you responded to and see that Dave Shaw had a way to do it that changed the field definitions to allow for an 8 digit phone number.
I hope this helps or gives you some ideas. I still haven't heard from anyone on my last question about what is the best way to go to still be able to upgrade to version 2 when it comes out.

Hi David, I saw your post for help on international phone numbers for the ebase program. I also live in Australia & am having a heck of a time understanding how to change the field properties for this one thing. I do have Filemaker Pro 5.5, but only a trial version. Can I still change the field properties with the trial version? If so, HOW? What file do i need to open up & what field do I need to change?
