Sorry for the rather abrupt comment, folks.  I've learned I don't do well at
2 AM trying to resolve database issues.  If anyone can offer any advise on
why this pesky $-sign keeps showing up, I'll send you heaps of good vibes
and a card on your birthday.

(It must be something obvious I'm missing.)
