You know, you might play around with using the YTD field (e.g. the one used on the home screen which totals all contributions YTD) as the comparator against which the member level is set. I believe this would give you a membership level based on total contributions to date. It would probably entail some fancy calculation footwork and would only be updated properly when you run the "replace all find fields" script (unless you make some other modifications that I don't recommend you make). I haven't thought this through so don't have any more specific ideas as yet...
