Title: Re: [support] RE: Change of fiscal year
Yes, this is a point of confusion...depends upon how the organization wants to view and what they want to provide to donors.  Personally, I think donors, while they are very much interested in what they give each calendar year (IRS), are also very educated in realizing that this won't match up to organizational fiscal year...so they do the shift themselves.  So, I'm all for keeping it simple and consistent through and through....

we calculate things here on fiscal year, and since it is changing, then I've made the case that we also need to change the database to be consistent.  However, in doing those prior year comparisons, since it is a different time period, I wasn't sure how ebase handles that.  As long as it is clear, and consistent, I don't think there should be a huge problem.

So, what do you think?  Will those prior years shift along with the definition of the new fiscal year?

The whole fiscal vs calendar year problem is a mess. What you want to do depends on what you are using eBase for. We have development people who are only interested in calendar year data and financial people who are only interested in fiscal year data. There is actually a third possibilty that some people have said they would like, namely "last year (dynamic)".

Ideally ebase would compute all of these numbers and make them all available and/or configurable as to which you see. You need to ask your users which numbers they would like to see since currently they can only see one of them. In other words, even if you are changing your finances to fiscal year, you may want to leave eBase in calendar year mode.

Any suggestions out there for this?

We're on a short 9-month year, which will end Sept 30th, then are moving from a straight calendar year to Oct 1 - Sept 30th fiscal year.  The fiscal year totals, of course, are off now, and are driving me nuts.

What are the ramifications/implications of changes, especially in comparisons.  I assume, that once the change is made, the amounts will recalculate according to the new fiscal year....Or, are the prior dollar amounts, by year, are they set in stone and aren't calculated fields?  And, how do I do the change?

thanks!!
