Thanks for the help Dave. Unfortuneatly, the suggestions did not work.
Argh. I would very much like to just upgrade this v102 to a clean v103,
which I imagine would resolve this and other issues.
Can you suggest the best way to upgrade? When I use the ebase Import
function on a names.102 file, the Import fields are incomplete and I lose
several important pieces. I feel there must be an easier way to upgrade
than using the Import tool. Please suggest.
Thanks,
Tompkins

Very good job of explaining what you have done.

Unfortunately, when I do what you specify above, the body text is
visible. I can click back and forth between the Edit and Preview and
the text is visible both ways. Here's my best guess on what's
happening.
- when you type the body text into the email layout, you are typing
into a global field, which is in the names file and is common to all
records.
- when you click Preview, the body text is copied into a field in a
related file, custom_.102, in records related to the found set of
names records.
- my guess is that at some time you imported a bunch of records
incorrectly. When you use the ebase import procedure, the related
records in the custom, profile, and summary files are created as part
of the process. When you use FileMaker's import tools rather than the
ebase procedure, these records are not created. So, there is no
related record in the custom file to copy the body text into.
I can reproduce what you have described by adding a record to the
names file incorrectly, so I'm pretty confident that's what is wrong.
Here's how to fix it.
- Go to the home screen
- Hit the gray Find All button to select all the records in your file
- Select the menu item Scripts>Check for Related Records. This will
run through your entire file, and if the related records in custom,
profile, and summary don't exist, they will be created.
- Now try typing an email body text as you describe.
