Step one TURN OFF THE STUPIDITY OF MICROSOFT THAT SUPPRESSES THE FILE
EXTENSIONS. Your files have extension, you are just not showing them. Where
this is located is under My Compter menus, but depends on OS version. Look
for Folder Options. Then tell us what files you really have in your
directory.

The instructions for changing the next serial number are in the message
archives of this list.
