It appears that the increased interest in net security has prompted
both Microsoft and Qualcomm to block calls from external applications
to the current versions of their email clients (Outlook [Express] and
Eudora, respectively). If you're sending email through ebase it's
likely that an upgrade to the current version will break the email
function. I have heard of several discussions recently about
non-functioning email that can be traced to email program upgrades. I
have started recommending plug-ins to circumvent this problem. Enough
people have asked about it that this note on the list is warranted.

The version 2 developers have despaired of making email work reliably
with the variety of email clients with their security schemes, and
have opted to use a FileMaker plug-in called SMTPit to make email
possible. Plug-ins extend the capability of FileMaker in various
ways, including processing SMTP and POP email protocol. There are two
which you can use to send email directly from FileMaker (and
therefore ebase) using either Mac or Windows operating systems.

The one chosen by the ebase crew is SMTPit, published by Comm-Unity
Networking Systems.

The recommendation by the ebase developer team is pretty strong (this
is only my observation, of course, not an express endorsement by
TechRocks). Also, if you intend to move to version 2, you'll already
have experience with this plug-in. The associated plug-in to enable
receiving email and populating FileMaker records directly is POP3it.
Price is $65 for SMTPit, and $104 for both SMTPit and POPit.

There is another email plug-in available on both platforms. It's
called MailIt, and is published by Dacons,
http://www.dacons.net
Both the SMTP (send mail) and POP (receive mail) functions are
included in this plug-in. Price is $59.

I have installed and configured both plug-ins and both are pretty
simple to set up once you catch on to the concept of using external
functions to assemble text into the format of a standard email
message.

In both cases, a license would be needed for each machine used to
send email from ebase.
