The safest place to put them is nowhere. Why would you put them in ebase at
all unless you have one of the add-ins that allow directly charging credit
cards? We run a web site that takes credit card purchases. It goes through a
program on one of our machines called ICVerify which keeps track of credit
cards and I am not happy about it but it is sort of necessary to keep them
for at least a few days in case the customer has problems. Any of the
paperwork, e.g. a phone in order, with a credit card number on it goes
through the shredder immediately after it is charged. Just being anywhere on
one of your disks is a security exposure if you are connected to the
internet and someone hacks their way in.

The custom screen is just a layout on the names file so you would have to
change the password for it, which would foul up the rest of ebase. Even a
password on a FileMaker file does not really protect it as the file is not
encrypted on disk, e.g. you can pick it up with notepad and sort of read
most of the contents. About the closest you can come to one level of
protection is to create a new file with a different password than the ebase
passwords. That file would have two fields record number and credit card
number and a relationship back to the names file so it can have a layout
that displays some of the name and address info for instance. Do not put in
a relationship from any of the ebase files to this file as ebase will
attempt to open it and request the password. Only the person who needs to
know the credit card numbers would open this special file.
