Development and Communications Position Open

Job Title:                      Development and Communications Associate
Employee Classification:        Hourly, Full time
Accountability: Reports to Executive Director, meets with Chairs of
                        Marketing & Communications, Events committees

Project Summary:        Seattle Audubon seeks a person with excellent
computer and communications skills to assist the Development activities
(50%), coordinate Seattle Audubon's public relations & communications
processes (30%), and assist with events (20%).

Duties and Responsibilities:            

                1)      Help advance the mission of Seattle Audubon (to
protect birds and the natural environment by involving volunteers and the
community in education, advocacy, preservation, science, and enjoyment) by
supporting the development activities, coordinating the communications of
the organization, and being the staff contact for volunteers who are
coordinating the events.

                2)      Support the fundraising activities at Seattle
Audubon by managing the database in a completely accurate, confidential, and
timely way.  Record all gifts, generate the thank yous, keep the database
current.  Generate reports and analyze returns.  Research electronic forms
of fundraising.

                3)      Coordinate the mailing of fundraising appeals.  Do
everything but write the copy for the appeals: segment the recipients; print
the personalized letters; see that the bulk letters are produced; coordinate
the volunteer mailing teams.
 
                4)      Coordinate data entry with the membership records
team.

                5)      Provide logistical support to the board and the
development team so they may engage in donor stewardship.

                6)      Develop and implement processes for publicizing
programs and events in community calendars, Seattle Audubon newsletters and
other appropriate media.  Coordinate with staff and volunteers. Assist
program and activities staff in getting their content on the website by
acting as a liaison with the Management Information Systems (MIS) committee.

                7)      Coordinate the public relations activities of the
organization.  Maintain media database, assist in planning and implementing
publicity efforts by working with staff and volunteers.  

                8)      Track the publicity budget and assist in budget
preparation.

                9)      Assist with events by serving as the staff contact
for the volunteers who are coordinating the events.

Knowledge, Skills, Temperament and Abilities

*       Excellent computer and database knowledge, (Ebase, Access), Word,
working familiarity with PageMaker, Publisher and PhotoShop).  Must enjoy
and find satisfaction in computer work.  Must have high standards of
quality.

*       Strong organizational skills, highly accurate and detail-oriented
with the ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines.  Demonstrated
success in working as a team member, in solving logistical problems, meeting
deadlines and maintaining quality control.  Appreciates and practices
confidentiality.

*       Good writing and communications skills, and knowledge of marketing
and communications.  Ability to work with volunteers and non-professional
writers to produce high quality, informative communications. Strong grammar
and proofreading skills.

*       Ability to work with volunteers and staff on communications efforts:
understanding how to motivate others to meet standards and deadlines, and
coordinating the efforts of many to produce successful projects. Willing to
ask questions, seek out information from cohorts.  Team player.  Humor a
plus!

Interrelationships:     Position works with the entire staff and all
programs of the organization, plus with volunteers who handle the events.
Works closely with Development, Newsletter, Marketing and Communications,
Events, and Technology chairs and the Executive Director.  

Working Conditions: The full-time position will share office space with at
least one other person.  Technology is first-rate, office is non-smoking.

Salary Range is competitive.    $1866/mo - $2800/mo. Plus benefits.

Conservation Coordinator Position Open

Job Title:                      Conservation Coordinator
Employee Classification:        Salaried.  Full time
Accountability: Reports to Executive Director and Chair of Conservation
Committee

Summary:        Seattle Audubon seeks a Conservation Coordinator to promote
conservation policies, coordinate advocacy activities and volunteers.  The
position requires a person who is knowledgeable about northwest bird and
wildlife conservation.  The position supports the Conservation Committee and
provides leadership for the conservation activities of the organization.  

Duties and Responsibilities:            

                1)      Advance the mission of Seattle Audubon (to protect
birds and the natural environment by involving volunteers and the community
in education, advocacy, preservation, science, and enjoyment) by being
thoroughly aware of the mission, ensuring that it is infused into the
conservation programs and activities.

                2)      Identify and research emerging conservation issues,
emphasizing regional issues. Assist the Conservation Committee in
determining a course of action.  Help formulate recommended resolutions for
the board.  Be the initial point of contact for groups requesting help in
conservation litigation.

                3)      Communicate issues and board resolutions to the
membership, general public, and decision-makers through the media, Seattle
Audubon publications, and public presentations.  Generate and distribute
"action alerts" and, in concert with the Advocate for Wildlife Habitat, work
to develop a mechanism for engaging the rapid and effective participation of
our members.

                4)      Field calls from the public, our members and other
organizations.  Determine the next steps and educate callers how to take
action on their own or how to link up with local groups engaged in
conservation advocacy, including Seattle Audubon.

                5)      Represent the organization on committees, in public
forums, with elected officials, and in negotiations on a variety of complex
conservation issues.  Network and coordinate advocacy with National Audubon,
other Audubon chapters, and with other environmental groups.

                6)      Identify, train, and support volunteers.  Supervise
periodic interns.  Maintain a corps of conservation activists.
                7)      In concert with the Conservation Chair, and
Executive Director, determine level of participation, then, advise only,
monitor, or participate directly in Seattle Audubon projects, such as the
Shade Coffee and Cats Indoors Campaigns.  

                8)      Work with the other Conservation staff member (the
Advocate for Wildlife Habitat) and the Conservation Chair and committee
members in a well-coordinated way so as not to duplicate efforts.  Develop
and implement annual strategic goals and quarterly work plans together,
according to priorities of the organization.  Help guide the vision and
growth of Conservation programs and activities at Seattle Audubon.  Share
and seek advice from other conservation staff.

                9)      Participate in the development of resources for
Conservation.  Be available for presentations to potential donors.
Participate in grant applications.  Develop the annual Conservation budget
and track it.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

*       B.S. or B.A., related fields.  Must be dedicated to wildlife
conservation.  
*       
*       Excellent understanding of PNW birds, wildlife and habitat
conservation.  Up-to-date knowledge of conservation policy and "hot" issues,
especially for the Puget Sound region.
*       
*       Experience with policy-making and politics, plus citizen activism.
Understands how to craft comment letters, how the political process works,
and how to engage our members for a rapid response.
*       
*       Good written and oral communication skills, and ability to convey
complex information simply, to a variety of audiences.  Outgoing.  Good
self-knowledge.  Clear thinker.  Able to take a stand and remain
professional, respectful when under pressure.  Humor a plus!
*       
*       Ability to build successful coalitions.  Well-organized, able to
oversee projects, measure success.
*       
*       Ability to work well with volunteers and to motivate others to meet
standards and deadlines, & coordinate the efforts of many.  Understands &
enjoys the volunteer culture.

*       Media experience a plus, and expertise in speaking about
controversial or divisive issues.

Interrelationships:     Position works closely with conservation staff,
volunteer conservation committee, Conservation Chair and the Executive
Director.
