I believe the manuals were written for Filemaker version 4. There are
some interface differences between 4 and 5, so you will see some
variations in what the manuals say about how to find a particular
feature.

>For example, on page 9-4 of the ebase Amin. manual v1.03, item no. 10. says
>"Select Browse from the Mode Menu..." My screen has no Mode menu (nor could
>I find a "status area" mentioned on p. 9-1);

The status area is the gray space on the left which shows the record
count and the "rolodex" icon which has various uses depending on the
mode you are in. The status area is toggled on and off with a small
icon next to the mode popup in the lower left. It looks like a small
screen with the left side grayed out.

>instead I found Modes as
>subcommands on the View menu. But in the next sentence, a Book icon is
>mentioned; I can't find this either.

The Book icon is also known as the rolodex. You'll see it once you
turn the status area on.

>I also can't find "Test letter
>printing" on the Script menu. Etcetera.

Are you in the payments file? There are solicitation letter layouts
in the names file which look similar to the the thank you letters.
There isn't a Test Letter script in the names file, so you won't see
it unless you are looking at Thank You letters in the payments file.
