Thank you everyone for your comments. You helped me to sleuth out the problem. I have been using the ebase output button. The problem is with Word. Because the exported ebase .csv file has no headers, Word uses the first record to create field names. If I save the file in ebase as .mer, headers are created by ebase and Word uses these for field names. I presume whatever program my mail house uses (they want the data as a .csv file) does not use the first record to create field names, but I'll check with them to make sure. Other database programs I have used include an option to create headers during the export. I was wondering if ebase had such a function that I didn't know about - hence my question to the list.
