And I would add that you want to “close” these people because otherwise every time you look for the open pledges, say to send others a monthly invoice, you would get them—even though you know they’ll never pay :-).

I'd like to know what this should be used for.  If someone fails to fulfill their pledge, is the amount unfulfilled entered here in order to "close" the pledge?  If not, what's normally done with unfulfilled pledges - just left "open"?

You've got it exactly right. The "writeoff amount" is used to close a pledge that you do not expect to collect.
