I have seen this once before, If I am not mistaken what you have is a
Windows registry problem not a FileMaker or ebase problem. If the extension
.103 is correctly associated with FileMaker 5.5, FileMaker is be able to be
"jump started" from the ebase.103 file just as you have tried to do.

My best guess is that for some reason the Windows registry association which
allows this to happen is passing some piece of wrong information to
FileMaker which cannot then finish the launching of ebase.  Unfortunately
the Windows registry is very hard to understand and fix when something goes
wrong.

At times uninstalling and reinstalling FileMaker will fix this but not
always.
