First, if you have more than a couple of users who require access to the ebase files, you will save much grief if you invest in a copy of Filemaker Server. It's pretty costy, $750 I think if you get it through TechRocks, but only one or two crash recoveries will pay for that. Second, it is technically possible to share the files across the internet the same as you do across the TCP/IP (Ethernet) network in your office. The practical hurdles are sometimes daunting, though. - You really need to install the office copy on a separate machine, preferably with FileMaker Server. - You need the machine serving ebase to have a fixed IP address - You need high-speed connections (DSL or better) at both the server and client sides - You need to configure the DSL router at the server location to permit TCP/IP traffic through port 5003 - and you need to stock up on patience. Even at DSL speeds, the interaction from the remote locations will be slower than you expect. I have two benchmarks - clients who have DSL connections with a few thousand records where it takes me a minute and a half to log on, and one with over 100,000 records where it takes 15 minutes to open the standard file set. -- -- Dave Shaw H4 Consulting tel: 206-954-7526 fax: 206-625-1338 ------------------ Reminder to each recipient: To change your list account preferences, go to http://email.sparklist.com/scripts/lyris.pl?enter=support and enter the email address you used to subscribe to the ebase support list:: [email protected] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] --------------------------------------------------------------------- ebase - Relationship Management for Nonprofits, http://www.ebase.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------
