So there is no easy way, sigh. Well I decided to do an end-run and export
the data because I didn't want to take the chance of changing something
within ebase, i.e. screwing up. In case anyone else would like to know:

I set up another FM db with fields for Dues and the 2 separate appeals we
wanted to appear in our form letter, plus name, address and salutation and
most importantly for my purposes I set up a record ID field. I added in the
post dates and source code just to be able to monitor that what I was
getting was what I wanted!

In the Payments file I chose the dates and type of payment I wanted
(1/1/01..12/31/01, Dues) then I exported via FM tool to my new db. I did
this for each type of data/source I needed. The record ID made sure the
right people got the right data.

Then I used Word's regular data merge functions to use the new db and voila!
the form letter was born.
