Just to clarify, when you're working on the FreeRunner via SSH, you're already root (superuser) so sudo is unnecessary, and as you discovered it can even cause problems. (with redirection)
And it is possible to restart networking via SSH: /etc/init.d/networking restart should do it, but failing that you can use: /etc/init.d/networking stop; /etc/init.d/networking start When it stops, your SSH session is in limbo, with networking down. With both on one commandline, or with restart, your session will be interrupted then resume.
